Employee Assistance Programmes are great for businesses, whatever size the business. For smaller budgets, they can be an unrealistic luxury. What I offer is a bespoke service for employees - although most companies fund 6 sessions, I can provide anywhere between 4 - 20 sessions.
How can you help employees?
People have lives primarily, and you may or may not know what is going on for your employees. As well as personal lives, people also have their work life. People are usually able to focus and switch off to what is going on in their life. Sometimes however something big is going on for your employee, and this can make it difficult to concentrate at work, their behaviour may seem different, and they may seem unproductive in comparison to how they can be. Stress stems from experience - whether personal life or work life. When people are experiencing stress in each of these areas it can be hard for people to get away, and find a space. Continued stress leads to anxiety, and sometimes depression. As well as an awful experience for employees, it can be detrimental to business - as performance is affected and/or absences occur. By offering a quality counselling service to people, you are supporting their welfare. In supporting welfare you are supporting health. If your staff are healthier, less stressed and generally more resilient - sick days/absences will be less likely to occur, and the business, therefore, saves money and runs smoothly. Whether a small or large business, it will suffer if people are suffering from stress, anxiety or depression. If you are a small, or niche business it can take only one person to be off sick for the business to drastically fall behind. If you are a large business - the larger amount of sickness there will be. A 2010 systematic study by McLeod of the research evidence, showed that workplace counselling interventions have been found to reduce sickness absence rates in organisations by as much as 50%. As an employer, and in agreement with your employee you will be given feedback on attendance to counselling. Counselling is not about telling people what to do, nor managing them. It is about helping people to recover, and start to help them manage themselves.
