coming for counselling, you may be wondering what is involved - taking that first step can feel scary. This brief introduction gives you an idea
People come to counselling for a wide range of problems that is troubling them or affecting their life. It can be helpful talking to someone impartial who won`t judge and who you don`t have to worry about offending that persons feelings whilst gaining a different perspective on situations.
It is natural to feel apprehensive - taking that first step can feel scary. If something has been troubling you it might be helpful to discuss it with someone who is neither a friend nor relative but who will listen to you and help you understand your situation; maybe you need support during a difficult period; perhaps you aren't even sure what the problem is - you simply have a feeling that things are not quite right.
Counselling provides you with an opportunity to talk confidentially about how you feel, to become more self-aware, and to work towards a more satisfying and authentic life. I provide a supportive relationship within which you feel safe enough to explore the problems you are facing, in ways which respect your values, abilities and culture.
At your initial session, you will have an opportunity to talk about what has brought you to counselling. During this session and, if you choose to continue, in subsequent sessions, you will be encouraged to express your feelings and thoughts, explore the issues which are troubling you, and discover ways of living more resourcefully. The work you do will be about self-discovery and about finding solutions which are right for you.
I provide a supportive relationship within which you feel safe enough to explore the problems you are facing, in ways which respect your values, abilities and culture. I am eclectic which means I am able to draw on my wide knowledge training and skills to help you whilst also using my highly honed intuition and perceptive abilities to work with you.
Sessions last 50 minutes; the number and frequency of sessions is entirely up to you. I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and am on its Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists. I trained at Liverpool John Moores University. I am fully insured and I attend regular supervision to ensure that I meet professional standards and work according to the BACP's Ethical Framework
I approach counselling from a Person-centred perspective alongside various approaches enabling you to acknowledge and work with thoughts and feelings which are difficult to approach or which are on the edge of consciousness, and which you might otherwise find difficult to express.
How long will counselling last?
That is always your choice and also depends on the type of issue and service you choose. I am able to work in a short term or longer term deeper way, to commit to longer-term therapy. The relationship between therapist and client will be safe, but sometimes challenging to create movement, enabling you to look at the issues and feelings you want to, at your own pace and over the time span that feels right for you so it’s important that you find a therapist with whom you feel comfortable.
This can be discussed and agreed between you and your counsellor. Counselling can be a rewarding experience, but also a challenging one,
